Breast Reconstruction
Restoring Confidence and Femininity

At Dr Sarrià’s Plastic Surgery Clinic, breast reconstruction is an integral, essential part of breast cancer treatment. Beyond aesthetic restoration, this procedure plays a fundamental role in the patient’s emotional and psychological recovery. A breast cancer diagnosis is one of the greatest health concerns for women, affecting 1 in 8 women in developed countries. Dr Sarrià’s approach therefore focuses on offering a comprehensive solution, working alongside gynaecologists, oncologists and other specialists to ensure the woman’s complete wellbeing.

Before & After

Aims of
Breast Reconstruction

The main goal of breast reconstruction is to restore the natural shape of the breast, including recreating the areola and nipple. This procedure is not purely aesthetic; it is crucial for the patient’s emotional health, helping her regain her body image and restore her self-esteem. Through this surgery, patients experience an immediate improvement in their quality of life, and in their personal, social and sexual life, allowing them to feel whole again.

The Optimal Timing for Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction can be performed immediately — that is, during the same mastectomy procedure — or in a delayed fashion, weeks or even years after oncological treatment. Dr Sarrià prefers immediate reconstruction, as this technique reduces the number of surgical procedures required and minimises exposure to anaesthesia. The psychological benefit is also significant, as it avoids the trauma caused by breast removal without the possibility of reconstruction at the same time. However, if reconstruction is carried out at a later stage, such as after chemotherapy or radiotherapy, results remain exceptional.

Breast Reconstruction Methods

At Dr Sarrià’s clinic, various breast reconstruction techniques are used, tailored to each patient’s individual needs. The most common methods include:

  1. Reconstruction with Breast Implants This is a very popular, effective option. In this procedure, cohesive silicone gel implants with an anatomical shape are used to achieve a natural result in terms of shape and projection. Reconstruction can be performed in a single procedure with an implant, or in two stages, using tissue expanders to prepare the skin before placing the final implant.
  2. Reconstruction with Autologous Tissue In some cases, the patient’s own tissue — such as skin, fat or muscle — is used for reconstruction. The most commonly used techniques include the DIEP flap (abdominal) and the latissimus dorsi flap (back). Although more complex, these techniques allow for natural results and can sometimes be supplemented with an implant to achieve the desired volume.
  3. Mixed Reconstruction This technique combines the use of autologous tissue with breast implants. It is ideal when sufficient volume cannot be achieved with the patient’s own tissue alone, ensuring a natural, harmonious result.
  4. Reconstruction with Fat Grafts (Lipofilling) Lipofilling is a technique that uses fat extracted from other areas of the body to perform breast reconstruction. It is particularly useful when the skin has undergone radiotherapy, or when touch-ups are needed to improve breast symmetry. The use of the patient’s own fat also improves the quality of the breast skin, restoring its texture and firmness.

Results and Quality of Life

The results of breast reconstruction performed by Dr Sarrià not only improve patients’ physical appearance, but also support significant emotional recovery. Restoring the breast allows the patient to resume a fuller social and sexual life, helping her reintegrate into her family and professional environment.

At Dr Sarrià’s Clinic, we are proud to support every patient through her recovery process, prioritising comprehensive care, attention to detail and personal wellbeing. Breast reconstruction represents not only physical restoration, but also an act of reaffirmation, helping women recover their confidence and femininity.
