Abdominoplasty
Redefine your abdomen with long-lasting results
An abdominoplasty, also known as an abdominal dermolipectomy, is an advanced aesthetic surgery designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen and restore tone to the abdominal muscles. This procedure is ideal for people who, despite following a healthy lifestyle and exercising, cannot get rid of excess abdominal fat or muscular issues such as diastasis (separation of the abdominal muscles), which often occurs after multiple pregnancies or significant weight loss.
Dr Sarrià, a highly experienced plastic surgeon, offers a comprehensive solution for those wanting a firm, toned abdomen. Depending on each patient’s needs, he may perform a traditional abdominoplasty or combine it with procedures such as liposuction to achieve a harmonious body contour.
Before & After

What does abdominoplasty surgery involve?
An abdominoplasty is performed through a horizontal incision just above the pubic area. Through this incision, the surgeon removes excess skin and fat and, if necessary, tightens weakened abdominal muscles using a technique called plication, which brings the muscles together to restore firmness.
In some cases, if only a moderate amount of excess fat needs to be removed, abdominal liposuction can be combined with the surgery to achieve more definitive results.
Who is the ideal candidate for an abdominoplasty?
An abdominoplasty is an excellent option for people with excess fat and skin in the abdomen, especially when these cannot be removed through diet or exercise. It is particularly suited to:
- Women who have had several pregnancies and experience abdominal sagging.
- People who have lost a significant amount of weight and have excess skin in the abdomen.
- Those with abdominal diastasis (separation of the abdominal muscles).
Abdominoplasty
procedure
At the first consultation, Dr Sarrià will assess the excess fat, skin quality and abdominal muscle tone to determine whether a full abdominoplasty or a mini abdominoplasty is required. In some cases, this can be combined with liposuction for more comprehensive body-contour remodelling.
Key points of
abdominoplasty
- Anaesthesia: General or epidural.
- Procedure duration: Between 2 and 3 hours.
- Hospital stay: Generally 48 hours.
- Postoperative discomfort: Moderate, manageable with medication.
- Recovery: Swelling can last from 6 weeks to 3 months; numbness is temporary.
- Final result: Achieved at around 3 months, with permanent results provided proper maintenance is followed.
What type of anaesthesia is used?
An abdominoplasty is performed under epidural or general anaesthesia in an operating theatre, depending on the characteristics of the procedure. For less complex procedures, such as a mini abdominoplasty, local anaesthesia with sedation may be used.
Planning your
abdominoplasty
During the consultation, Dr Sarrià will discuss with the patient the most suitable option: full abdominoplasty, mini abdominoplasty or a combination with liposuction. The incisions will be tailored to the needs and scope of the procedure, and in some cases, the surgery can be combined with other body-contouring techniques.
Recovering from your
abdominoplasty
After surgery, it is normal to experience swelling and discomfort. Compression garments are recommended to reduce swelling and help the skin adjust to the new contour. It is important to avoid intense physical exertion during the first few weeks and to follow Dr Sarrià’s recommendations.
Most patients can return to work after 10 to 14 days, but should avoid strenuous physical activity for at least a month.
Results of your
abdominoplasty
Results are visible shortly after surgery and continue to improve as swelling subsides. The abdomen becomes firmer, flatter and more toned, and the waist narrows, achieving a more streamlined, harmonious figure. With a healthy lifestyle, results are maintained long-term, giving a younger, healthier-looking abdomen.
