Otoplasty
Aesthetic and Functional Ear Correction

Otoplasty is a reconstructive surgery aimed at correcting prominent ears, commonly known as “bat ears”, or reducing the size of large ears, improving their shape and position. This procedure seeks to achieve a harmonious balance in the face, restoring confidence in those who feel self-conscious about this feature.

Before & After

At what age is it advisable
to have an otoplasty?

Otoplasty can be performed on children from the age of 6, when the ear cartilage is still flexible, allowing for greater mouldability and more balanced growth. In cases where prominent or oversized ears affect a child’s self-esteem or social development, it is advisable to intervene as soon as possible. The surgery is also effective in adults, improving both physical appearance and psychological wellbeing.

How can otoplasty benefit me?

This procedure can have a positive impact not only on the appearance of the ears, but also on the personal confidence of those who need it. Self-consciousness caused by the shape or size of the ears can limit social and emotional interaction, but with otoplasty, the shape and position of the ears are improved, achieving a more harmonious, natural aesthetic. At the initial consultation, Dr Sarrià will assess the case and determine the most suitable technique to achieve the best results.

Surgery and Anaesthesia

Otoplasty is performed under local anaesthesia combined with sedation or, in some cases, under general anaesthesia, depending on the patient’s age and needs. The procedure takes approximately one hour, and the patient is discharged a few hours after the surgery.

In children, the surgery is generally performed under general anaesthesia to prevent involuntary movements during the procedure. The surgical technique is tailored to each patient’s particular characteristics and is generally performed through an incision on the back of the ear, where the cartilage is precisely reshaped to achieve a more natural, aesthetic form.

Otoplasty Postoperative Period

After surgery, a bandage will be applied around the head to hold the ears in their new position. This bandage is worn for 24 hours and then replaced with a light headband, which should be worn all day for a week.

The postoperative period is generally comfortable, although some patients may experience slight pressure or pain in the area, which can easily be managed with oral painkillers. Adults can return to work within 24–48 hours, while children can go back to school after around 7–10 days, depending on how their recovery progresses.

Otoplasty is an effective, safe procedure that not only improves the appearance of the ears, but also contributes significantly to the emotional wellbeing of those who need it.
